  • 'De Bergense School' is the first expressionist art movement with its own manifesto in the Netherlands. Around 1910 the first artists settled in Bergen, North Holland. A new art of painting was developed under the inspiring leadership of the French painter Henri Le Fauconnier (1881-1945). From 1914 the artists of the Bergen School worked there in a common style. Well-known names are Elsa Berg, Arnout Colnot, Dirk Filarski, Leo Gestel, Frans Huysmans, Wim Schuhmacher, Mommie Schwarz, Charley Toorop, Jaap Weijand, Piet and Matthieu Wiegman and Piet van Wijngaerdt. They painted landscapes, still lifes and travel impressions in angular, powerful shapes, applied with broad brushstrokes in contrasting colors. Bergense School connoisseur, author and collector Renee Smithuis tells passionately about these ultra-modern and very successful Dutch expressionists.
